Introductory AI for Both Computer Science and Neuroscience Students
نویسنده
چکیده
Macalester College offers a single undergraduate elective in artificial intelligence. This course is cross-listed between Computer Science and Cognitive and Neuroscience Studies, and includes majors from both disciplines. Computer science students bring strong technical knowledge and skills but little awareness of the deeper issues of cognition and intelligence, while neuroscience students bring knowledge about biological and psychological models for human and animal behavior, but much less technical knowledge and experience. To meet the needs of these very different student populations, the course was redesigned from the ground up: choice of topics, classroom activities, kinds of assigned work. The resulting course retains strong technical content, and provides opportunities for all students to pursue topics related to their interests. It has maintained strong enrollment by computer science majors, even as the number of majors has declined, and has seen an increasing number of neuroscience majors each time it is

Artificial Intelligence for Non-Majors at Multiple Levels
Over the past several years, many computer science departments have seen a decline in enrollments. This paper describes two courses – at the introductory and advanced levels – that hope to attract students to computer science through topics in Artificial Intelligence. Over the past several years, many computer science departments have seen a decline in enrollments. As the program committee for ...
متن کاملTeaching Introductory AI: A Design Stance
Teaching introductory AI is notoriously challenging. My experience in teaching AI suggests that this because of four main reasons: 1. Fragmentation of AI as a Subject of Study. AI as a subject of study and research is not only new, it is also fragmented. Beyond a few general goals and core assumptions, there is at present little agreement among AI researchers about even the most basic issues in...
متن کاملRobots as Recruitment Tools in Computer Science: The New Frontier or Simply Bait and Switch?
There is little doubt that the use of robots in introductory classes is an effective way to spark an initial interest in Computer Science and recruit students into our classes, and subsequently recruit some of them as Computer Science majors. But when the semester is over, the vast majority of our students are unlikely to see robots in the classroom again until they take advanced courses in AI ...
متن کاملThere's Something about AI Exercises
Problems and methods encountered in artificial intelligence hold great promise for inspiring interest in computer science in general and AI in particular. The challenge faced in using such problems in introductory computer science courses is three-fold: to prune the complexity that is beyond beginning students, but to preserve the engaging nature of the problems, and still exercise the topics o...
متن کاملEngaging Computing Students with AI and Robotics
In this paper we describe a new curriculum for a CS1 course that uses personal robots as a context for learning introductory computer science. Students learn several computing and AI-related concepts in the process of exploring and designing robot behaviors. We believe that the use of personal robots and engaging examples can provide a good foundation for learning computing and hence serve to a...
